Researchers said the uptick has raised new concerns about monkeypox cases in African communities, which in turn increase the risk of new global outbreaks.

The virus was first reported in humans in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2017, but since then it has spread to neighboring countries including Rwanda and Uganda.

WHO said that monkeypox has reached an epidemic phase in the region and urged travellers to avoid visiting affected areas. It also recommended that local authorities should be more active in preventing transmission of the virus among humans.

Thirty-eight deaths have been linked to monkeypox, 13 of which were in places that historically reported outbreaks. The likelihood of monkeypox cases, illness, and death in parts of Africa is undecided.
