The Golden Globes returned to prime time on Tuesday night, and another win for a Hollywood great was announced. The semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film “The Fabelmans” by Steven Spielberg, which was hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael, took home the best drama and best director prizes at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. After a period of controversy sparked by issues with representation within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, it was the first programme back.
The dark comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” won awards for best comedy/musical, screenplay, and Colin Farrell’s performance as the best comedic actor. For “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won for lead comedy actress and supporting actor, respectively, while Cate Blanchett for “Tár” and Austin Butler for “Elvis” took home the top acting honours in the drama categories.
The Banshees of Inisherin and “The Fabelmans” are chosen best drama and best comedy/musical, respectively.
For “Elvis,” Austin Butler receives the best actor in a drama, and for “Tár,” Cate Blanchett wins best actress.
The main comedic actor prizes go to Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere”) and Colin Farrell (“Banshees of Inisherin”).
The celebrated “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is defeated by the dark comedy by Martin McDonagh. The Fabelmans, directed by Steven Spielberg, wins best drama, as expected. As he acknowledges composer John Williams, the filmmaker recalls his time as John Cassavetes’ personal assistant. But because his office is on the Universal lot and he wants to remain there, he wants to finish the NBC show, which is running behind schedule.
The winner of the Globe for best TV drama is the “Game of Thrones” prequel. Executive producer Ryan Condal declares, “I’ve got to admit, ‘Severance’ is an outstanding programme.” “House of Dragon” would have been similar to “Severance” if I could have. Even less unexpectedly, he declares “GOT” to be a “very wonderful show.”
