“Jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis, who revived the genre, has died at 87”. The renowned musician was known for his smooth-jazz style and is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of the genre. He first gained prominence by winning a Grammy award in 1970.
Ramsey Lewis is one of the most recognizable jazz pianists from the heyday of bebop. His distinctive, horn-laden vocals brought the music back to a mainstream audience, and his classic albums on Verve Records include The New Boss Piano Solos and Ramsey Lewis Trio Entertains. The pianist owns a couple of homes in Malibu and Palm Springs but most often visits home to Los Angeles. Ramsey is a founding member of the Rat Pack and has donated many times to Alzheimer’s research. He has also been inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame, as well as the Southern California Music Hall of Fame.
