Discord has been available on PC, Mac, Linux and mobile for some time now, but the company is finally bringing its chat platform to consoles. The Discord Xbox One app will let gamers play with friends in real-time while they talk to each other through their headsets and controllers.
Microsoft announced the launch of the Discord app through its blog post on Tuesday. The company also revealed that developers can now use Discord’s voice chat feature for their games and apps — making it easier for Xbox gamers to talk with friends and teammates while playing titles like Fortnite or Apex Legends.
Discord on Xbox is finally here. But you need to follow some steps to make it work. Discord has made its way onto Xbox consoles as of Sept. 13, but that doesn’t mean that you can just download it now, walk right into the game and start using it. Before you do that though, there are a few things still left to do to get Discord voice chat working on Xbox One consoles.
We partnered with Microsoft to bring you the best Discord experience possible. We did test it with the Xbox Insiders, and we did not see any issues with the step-by-step process. For the most part, it’s because we were originally voice chat for gamers. Gaming is in our DNA. It is definitely one of the main reasons people use us.

To activate Discord on Xbox, players must first install the Xbox mobile app, log in, and link their Xbox account to their Discord account. Then open a voice channel on Discord and tap the option in the Discord app to cast to Xbox. The Xbox app will reopen and prompt the user to confirm the change. Finally, your Discord conversation should be connected to your console. After doing this once, Discord should work on Xbox.
The app also includes an integrated Discord chat feature that lets you talk with your friends using your regular mobile phone number. That means you can use Discord from any device, even if you’re not on your home PC or phone — but you’ll need at least one of those two devices nearby for the feature to work.
Here’s how it works: Once you have the Xbox One app downloaded and installed on your console, all you have to do is open it up and start chatting away like normal. Instead of having to use a separate client like Skype or Google Hangouts, all communication happens through your Xbox One itself, which makes this feature much more useful when compared to previous voice-chat solutions like Kinect and Kinect 2.0 (which required expensive add-on equipment).
