The Click Times: Sling is one of the best cord-cutting streaming services.
Sling TV allows you to watch live TV for a much lower cost than all of the other best cable TV alternatives, let alone all of the cable and satellite packages. This is your chance to cut the cord while still getting many of the channels you want to watch and saving a lot of money. Right now, new subscribers can try out everything the service has to offer for half off your first month.
Sling is one of the best streaming services, allowing users to watch live sports, news, and popular television shows and movies.
Sling TV seals the deal with low prices, customizable plans, and compatibility with the majority of major streaming devices, not just Roku and Fire TV Sticks and Cubes.
• For the first month, Sling TV activate is currently 50% off (opens in new tab).
Sling, in addition to live TV, has a Cloud DVR feature that allows users to record up to 50 hours of their favourite shows to watch later (though major competitors do this better). Sling’s also acknowledged recent buffering issues and claims to have fixed them (more on that below).
Sling TV activation code also allows you to rewind a show and watch older episodes on demand for select shows. Local networks (in select markets), ESPN, and a slew of favourites like AMC, Food Network, HGTV, Lifetime, and the Disney Channel are all included in Sling TV packages. You can also include RedZone and the NFL Network.
Sling TV isn’t the only OTT service for cord cutters; Hulu with Live TV, YouTube TV, Fubo TV, DirecTV Stream, and Philo TV all offer live TV, though their channel lineups, features, and prices differ. Check out our comparison guide to Hulu Live vs. YouTube TV vs. Sling vs. DirecTV Stream.
After signing up for Sling TV, all you have to do is download the app to any of the many devices that the service supports.
Is Sling TV’s cable TV replacement worth it?
Sling TV cost: How much does Sling TV cost?
Sling TV activate is the same price for both of its flavours, Sling Orange and Sling Blue — both are priced the same.
Sling Orange costs $35 and includes 31 channels, whereas Sling Blue costs $35 and includes 41 channels. However, the two packages have different channel lineups, so if you want to make sure you can watch your favourite one, consider the combined Blue/Orange pack, which costs $50 per month and has 47 channels.
However, all three of those packages are 50% off for the first month for new subscribers.
Sling TV also provides add-on packages and features ranging in price from $5 to $21 per month. There are over a dozen add-ons, so your monthly subscription cost could exceed $100 if you want everything.
If you’re in a supported area, Sling also supports compatible over-the-air antennae. You can get a free indoor antenna when you pre-pay for two months of Sling TV activation code after visiting this page(opens in new tab) to see if your address qualifies.
If you don’t have Sling TV activate hardware, you can save money by prepaying for two months. That entitles you to a free AirTV Player and adapter, as well as an antenna.
New subscribers can check out Sling for a discounted price of $10 off the first month. Sling Free, a new free TV streaming service with over 5,000 free TV shows and movies, is another option. You don’t even need to provide your email address or credit card information to sign up for Sling.
Sling TV bundles
Aside from the channel lineups, the main distinction between the two Sling TV packages is that Orange is a single-stream service, whereas Blue supports up to three concurrent streams.
This is especially important if you share an account with family and friends. Only one stream can be active at any given time with Sling Orange. Sling Blue allows multiple users to watch different channels at the same time.
For more information, see Tom’s Guide’s Sling Orange vs. Blue breakdown and our chart below.
Sling TV channels
Sling Orange has over 30 channels, and Sling Blue has over 40 networks. They do, however, have different channel lineups, so check to see which one has your favourite channels. Of course, you can get Sling Orange + Blue if you want them all.
If you’re perplexed, we’ve got you covered with a handy guide to Sling Orange and Sling Blue channels.
ESPN, AMC, BBC America, Cartoon Network, CNN, Comedy Central, the Disney Channel, Food Network, Freeform, HGTV, Lifetime, TBS, and TNT are among the channels included in the base Sling Orange package (i.e., without any add-ons).
Local NBC and Fox channels (in select cities) are available through Sling Blue, as are cable networks such as AMC, BET, Bravo, CNN, Fox News, FX, National Geographic, Nick Jr., Syfy, TBS, TNT, and USA.
In essence, Orange lacks NBCUniversal networks, whereas Blue lacks Disney-owned channels such as ESPN and the Disney Channel.
Sling TV add-on plans
Sling TV activation code has over a dozen add-on packages ranging from sports channels to premium movie bundles. The contents of each package would take too long to list, but as an example, the Sports Extra package costs $11 per month and includes NFL RedZone (which is included in Sling Blue), NBA TV, NHL Network, beIN Sports, and ESPN Bases Loaded.
Other add-ons, such as the Comedy Extra and Kids Extra packages, have increased in price to $6. The Sling TV website has a comprehensive list of add-ons and extras. (Opens in a new window)
Premium channels on Sling TV
Sling also allows you to subscribe to premium channels such as Showtime (which costs $10 per month and includes eight Showtime channels in total). The six Starz channels are available for $9 per month.
EPIX’s four channels are $5 per month.
Other premium extras, such as Lion Mountain TV (an outdoors content network) and Watch It Scream!, cost as little as $3 per month (for horror). You can even add karaoke for $7 per month with Stingray Karaoke, which claims to have 10,000 songs in both English and Spanish.
Local channels on Sling TV
Yes, Sling provides live local channels, though the selection varies by location. In certain cities and markets, Sling offers NBC and Fox. You’ll also need the Sling Blue or Sling Orange + Blue package. And if you travel, Sling TV activation code may not have those channels.
Of course, it’s not ideal, but if you really want to watch more broadcast network programming, consider getting one of the best HDTV antennas to watch all the local channels.
You can also use Sling to watch Showtime, NBA League, and other channels without purchasing an Orange or Blue subscription.
Football fans can use Sling to easily find out which channels are showing which games. Simply go to sling.com/gamefinder (opens in new tab) and enter your team’s city, state, or name. If you enter your ZIP code, this page will show you what games are streaming in your area.
How to Cancel Sling TV: How Do I Cancel Sling?
Sling TV is a month-to-month service that does not require a contract.
Sling can be started or stopped at any time, and there are no startup fees, cancellation penalties, or equipment rental fees.
One of our employees recently considered cancelling Sling TV after the buffering issues became too much to bear. Fortunately, Sling claims to have everything under control.
If you discover that Sling TV activation code isn’t what you expected, you can cancel your membership by following the company’s simple cancellation procedure. A Cancel Subscription link will appear on your account page. Again, select Cancel Subscription and explain why you’re leaving Sling.
Billing will stop immediately after Sling confirms your cancellation. You can cancel at any time for any reason because there are no contracts, and you will not be penalised.
Sling TV devices: How can I watch it?
Most major smart TVs, smartphones, and the best streaming devices are available as Sling TV devices.
• PC and Mac web browsers
• Apple’s iOS mobile devices
• Android mobile phones
• Apple TV (4th generation and later) devices
• Fire tablets
• Chromecast (OS 4.4.2 and later)
• Google Nest
• Oculus Go
• The majority of Roku devices
• TiVo 4K Streaming
• Xbox
Smart TVs from LG, Samsung, and Vizio
The latest version of the Sling app is currently available on Fire TV, Roku, Android TV, and the AirTV Mini.
Can I record shows on Sling TV DVR?
Yes, Sling TV allows you to record shows! Since leaving the beta stage, Sling’s Cloud DVR storage has grown slowly. A monthly subscription includes 50 hours of recording time.
Upgrade to the Cloud DVR Plus package and get 200 hours of recording for $5 per month.
Regrettably, that pales in comparison to Hulu and YouTube TV, which allow you to record an unlimited amount of content (which disappears after 9 months). DirecTV Stream offers unlimited 90-day recordings.
How fast does Sling TV internet need to be?
Sling TV provides internet speed recommendations based on the device you’re using to watch programming.
So, if you want to watch Sling TV on a mobile device like an iPhone or iPad, you’ll need at least 3 Mbps. When you switch to a TV, PC, or Mac, expect to need 5 Mbps to achieve the desired video quality.
To get the best streaming quality, Sling recommends getting internet speeds of at least 25 Mbps from your internet service provider.
Are there commercials on Sling TV during shows?
Yes, commercials are broadcast during shows on Sling. In general, you see exactly what you would see if you watched these channels on cable TV, complete with commercials. The ability to fast forward, rewind, or pause varies depending on the channel.
Can I watch movies on Sling TV?
Yes, many Sling channels, including AMC, FX, TBS, and USA, broadcast movies. In addition to the movies that air on included channels, Sling offers on-demand movies for a fee. The movies range in price from $2.99 to $4.99 and include both new releases and old favourites.
What on-demand content is available on Sling TV?
Sling TV’s Available Now feature provides access to video on-demand (VOD) content, which includes a good selection of movies, television shows, and documentaries. However, pinpointing exactly what is available at any given time is difficult.
Sling TV’s on-demand content is not determined by Sling; rather, each channel determines which content is available and for how long. Some movies and television shows may be available for an extended period of time, while others come and go. Use your Sling TV guide to see what on-demand content is available, which displays on-demand programming beneath the Schedule ribbon.
What is Sling TV error 9-XXX?
Some Sling TV users have reported sporadic problems with the service, whether it’s Error 9-300, Error 9-400, or something else. Errors that begin with a 9 and cause a disruption in service, according to Sling, “can occur for a variety of reasons.”
The most likely cause, however, occurs in “account personalization services,” which prevent a video from travelling to your device. Sling has a support page dedicated to this issue (opens in new tab) that recommends changing the channel to see if that helps, and gives you the option to open a case with tech support if that doesn’t work.
Is Sling TV worth the money?
You’re probably better off with cable or satellite TV if you like having a lot of channels and enjoy channel surfing. However, if Sling TV’s basic package or add-on packs include the majority of the programming you enjoy, it may be a better deal.
Sling’s programming can also be supplemented with other online services such as Amazon Prime ($119 per year), Crackle (free), Hulu ($7.99/month), and Netflix ($10.99/month).
So consider what you like to watch and calculate how much it will cost with Sling TV and other streaming services versus cable or satellite TV. Sling TV is currently offering a free three-day trial, so you can see how you like it firsthand.
