A British woman who has disappeared after a huge underwater volcano was killed on the tsunami waves met the peaceful nation of Tonga.
Angela Glover, 50, has lived in Tonga with her husband James since 2015 and founded theTonga Animal Welfare Society with her brother Nick Eleini. Glover had posted about the outbreak on Instagram.
The Hunga TongaHunga Haʻapai volcano erupted about 40 miles north of Tonga’s capital Nuku’alofa on Saturday, causing waves to smash the coast and people to run to higher ground. The island has an estimated population of 105,000 people, mostly of Polynesian descent.
Tongan authorities have not confirmed any other deaths linked to the tsunami, but United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said two people in Tonga have been reported missing. Dujarric didn’t know if Glover was one of them.
Across the Pacific Ocean, two people drowned on a beach in Peru in waves generated by the volcano, the Associated Press reported. Flooding caused minor damage in places like New Zealand and Santa Cruz, California.
