This year The Simpsons, are doing something they've never done before, they're going full anime with their annual Treehouse of Horror episode, which is now in its 33rd season.

This year's Halloween special is set to be an adaptation of Death Note, with Homer Simpson standing in as the beleaguered student who finds a magical book that allows him to kill anyone he'd like by writing their name down.

But this time around, the series is making a drastic departure from its tried and true cartoon animation style and opting for a more stylized look based on anime.

In a series of teaser images released by Fox and shared to Twitter, we can see the characters rendered like the chibi version of Ryuk that was shown in the Netflix adaptation.

Treehouse of Horror XXXIII an anime rewrite of Death Note will air on October 30 and will be second of the three segments.

They've done crazy subversions of other cartoons before, but this still feels like an interesting step forward for the 30+ year old animation series.
