Can you imagine America’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raiding the current President’s home? But it is correct. The FBI raided President Joe Biden’s home in Wilmington. Six additional confidential documents were recovered during this process. The department also has some of Biden’s handwritten notes in its possession. Bob Bauer, the president’s lawyer, provided this information. Biden voluntarily allowed the FBI to search his home, but the incident is noteworthy despite the lack of a search warrant.

On January 12, it was revealed that Biden’s lawyers had obtained classified records from one of his former offices at the Penn Biden Center in Washington just before the midterm elections, causing him embarrassment. Lawyers then discovered six more classified documents in Biden’s Wilmington home library from his time as vice president. The receipt of these documents has become a political accountability for Biden as he prepares to present his re-election bid. The incident harms Biden’s effort to make his tenure look better to the American public after the volatile tenure of predecessor Donald Trump. Bauer said on Saturday that the documents the FBI seized on Friday were related to Biden’s tenure as senator and vice president, while the notes were from his vice presidential term. The search lasted for about 13 hours, he said.

According to Bauer, the Justice Department has not yet analyzed the materials, so it is unclear how sensitive these documents are and whether the records that the FBI had removed from the system are still classified. Most classified records are released to the public after a maximum of 25 years, however some are kept secret for considerably longer. Senator Biden held that position from 1973 through 2009. “We realized that a significant number of documents were in the incorrect place, so we promptly gave them over to the Justice Department,” Biden told reporters on Thursday. First Lady Jill Biden was not home when Biden’s home was raided. She had gone to spend the weekend at her residence in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.It remains to be seen whether federal officials will conduct further searches at other locations. Biden’s personal attorneys previously searched the Rehoboth Beach residence and said they did not find any official documents or confidential records.

A Justice Department inquiry investigating Trump’s retention of sensitive information and official records after leaving office is complicated by the case. The Justice Department asserts that despite requests from the government, Trump took hundreds of documents marked confidential with him when he left the White House in early 2021 and failed to return them for months, forcing the agency to act in accordance with a search warrant in order to obtain them. Bauer said the FBI has asked the White House not to comment on the matter until the investigation is complete. Biden’s personal lawyer and White House lawyer were also present during the search. He said the FBI had “full access to the president’s residence, including personal handwritten notes, files, papers, memorabilia, to-do lists and schedules.”
Bauer said in a statement that the Justice Department “took possession of material believed to be within the scope of its investigation, including documents marked confidential and other materials.” Some of this material dates back to the President’s (Biden) services as Senate member and Vice President.
