International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 and, according to the International Women’s Day website, celebrates the “social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women” around the world. The day also calls for action to promote gender equality.

When was International Women’s Day first celebrated?
The day emerged from the women’s rights movement in industrialized countries at the beginning of the 20th century (early 1900s).

The Socialist Party of America first declared National Women’s Day in 1909. It was celebrated on the last Sunday in February until 1913. 1910, at the second International Conference of Working Women, a meeting of women from political and activist organizations in Copenhagen, the idea of an International Women’s Day was proposed and approved.
The day was first celebrated in several European countries the following year on March 19, 1911. The celebrations included rallies and events calling for women’s suffrage and an end to gender discriminations.

March 8 has been the fixed date for International Women’s Day since 1914, when the day was moved to allow Russian women to celebrate February 23 on the Gregorian calendar.

How do we celebrate International Women’s Day?

There are several ways to celebrate International Women’s Day. Compliance may include participation in all types of digital and in-person social gatherings, including but not limited to festivals, art exhibitions, and award ceremonies organized by all types of governmental, non-governmental, and corporate bodies. Some of this year’s events include a webinar with women leaders hosted by non-profit organization Toastmasters International and another virtual event celebrating local women in Kalamazoo County, MI who have made positive changes during the pandemic.
The International Women’s Day website contains an extensive searchable list of events around the world.
It was created in 2001 to consolidate the organization of the day and create annual themes and campaigns.
Last year’s theme was #ChooseToChallenge, designed to inspire people to challenge gender stereotypes and biases.

What is the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day?

This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias and calls on the world to speak out against instances of prejudice against women in the workplace, at school and at home.
